This month we are celebrating a clean sweep of certifications for our PHP development team, which means we have submitted to independent testing by Zend, the PHP company, and they have given us their seal of approval.
The traditional nature of the open source community is that there are always a lot of new entrants to the field who are finding their way around and learning as they go. Contrast this with the Microsoft .Net development industry, for instance, where you will find that structured training and certification is already well established.
The companies who make the open-source development tools that we use are slowly coming round to the idea of certification, in response to requests from developers who want to differentiate themselves from the bulk of the community and highlight their expert status.
As soon as we were made aware of the existence of a certification scheme for PHP, we committed to a programme of PHP certification for our PHP development team. Both members certified last month, becoming only the 12th and 13th people in the UK to do so, which means we now employ one in seven of the UK's PHP-certified engineers.
